We felt as if we had been playing parts in a fascinating movie that suddenly took a bad turn, in which we had worked like dogs for two weeks to produce something really spectacular and then were written out of the script.

Avoid default pronouns

Don't only use "he" when referring to hypothetical people.

Programmer ≠ He

When referring to hypothetical people, use gender neutral pronouns or switch back and forth equally

Reflect reality

Don't accept homogeneity as normal.

Diversity

I really hate the word 'diversity.'
I have a different word: normalizing. I am making TV look like the world looks. Women, people of color, LGBTQ people equal way more than 50 percent of the population. Which means it ain't out of the ordinary.

Diversity for diversity's normalizing's sake

Normalize:

  • Slidedecks
  • Examples
  • Hypothetical people
  • Photos
  • Panels
  • Speakers

Consciously Unbias

We all have unconscious bias, work to challenge it.

Applicants with "white-sounding" names were 50 percent more likely to get called for an interview.

Faculty participants rated the male applicant as significantly more competent and hire-able than the (identical) female applicant.
